About the Author:
These are light-hearted poems that the writer had composed to poke fun at Indian — mainly urban — foibles. They reflect in a measure how India’s urban society lives and works, how it seeks and finds recreation and how some character traits have become ingrained in its make-up.

Prattlers
Why do minders
of displayed art
prattle on and on
and on?
They open the doors
to talk to comrades,
rendering air-conditioning
non-existent.
Their voices echo in
galleries that are
poor cousins
of splendid settings abroad.
What was
so urgent or
pressing
to talk about?
Or were they just prattlers
happiest when prattling
in stentorian
voices?
Is it the establishment
that employs men who are
uncomfortable
with silence?
Or is it in the Indian psyche
to shun silence
and revel
in noise?
I wondered when
we would
learn
to appreciate art.
