My Hidebound God
God dear,
Silence divine,
It’s time someone
Told you some home-truths.
You are quite hidebound, you know.
Prayers as age-old chants please you.
To mantras you give a grave hearing,
Prayers set to ragas enthral you.
Kirtanas, kritis, bhajans, abhangs
Flatter your classical ear, gratify your taste
For musical devotion. Deny it if you can!
My prayers are mumbled incoherences,
The result of panic and quarrels with
Your silence: seamless and too august
To stoop and hear my spluttering of words
In choppy flow. Can’t you see
Their clamour will cease, their agitation calm
If you were to widen your choice of prayers,
Be less picky, become what you really are
– God… samadarshi.
