My Brother

All the answers are in your eyes,
Yet I question you silently.
And wonder, when one of your kin,
Kills one of mine in a distant dusty town,
A thousand unknown miles away.
Is there something left to say?
“History repeats itself,” my elders say.
“You’d be blind not to see the signs today.”
For when tomorrow comes advancing,
You will remember, only too bitterly,
How two little boys were betrayed,
And then strangled to death between bricks.
Innocent victims of a treacherously deceitful play.
And as I look at our bonds of clay,
I wonder, whose folly? And who will pay?

In memory of Jaspal Singh beheaded by the Taliban in Peshawar in Feb, 2010.
