Crimson Snow

A few jagged rocks
Struggle to stay above
The unrelenting mantle of snow
It is there the soldier seeks
Shelter from enemy bullets
That whine past him.
What am I doing, he thinks,
In this moonscaped land
Desperately trying to
Cling to life even as I
Search for a fellow human
Whom I must kill
To stay alive?
His question remained
Unanswered even as
A crimson stain spread
On the snow around him.
But the other question remains,
And there is no answer
As to why cold white snow
Should be coloured crimson.
