‘The Square Root of a Sonnet’ at the Royal Institute of London
The Square Root of a Sonnet, written by Nilanjan Choudhury and published by Writers Workshop, was performed at the renowned Royal Institution of London on 19th and 20th July, 2024. It was produced by the Centre for Film & Drama, India and directed by Prakash Belawadi, under the patronage of the Murty Trust.
“It has been a humbling, exhilarating and extraordinary experience to stage the play at the 200+ years old Royal Institution – in the same theatre where people like Faraday, Darwin, Jagadish Bose and Stephen Hawking have presented their work to the public.
The shows went off smoothly and were well received by a diverse, global audience. There were standing ovations and full houses in the evening shows.”
~ Nilanjan Choudhury, author of The Square Root of a Sonnet
“With a minimalist stage setting and a cast of four characters, the play keeps the audience engrossed for over two and a half hours. The script explores themes of ambition, mentorship and racial boundaries. It satires the often hypocritical nature of the scientific community. Eddington’s explanation of Einstein’s gravity using simple props — an apple, a ping pong ball, and a tablecloth — makes complex scientific ideas accessible to a non-scientific audience.”
