A Beautiful Country

Old age is a beautiful country, a different world,
a new universe; a sanctuary, the promised land.
I tumble into it reluctantly, but knowing in advance
the cosmic design; my body traces the charted path
following the sun’s heavenly arc.
In blind faith take one step at a time,
surefooted, keep time to the divine rhythm;
and arrive at the gate to the new land.
Bruised and aching from life’s journey,
I check my eager body at the threshold;
look back to ponder.
My footprints stretch glistening like a ribbon of water,
starting from the beginning,
dripping with love, pain and beauty,
a stream free-flowing, a tributary of something grand.
Suddenly I grasp the meaning, the magic of aging in nature,
the beauty of my last home and life’s romance with time.
