About the Author:
Indrayani Sawkar was born in 1934. She has written 40 novels and short story collections in Marathi. She has penned two novels in English, She the Accused and The Man from Sun (published in 1998 and 2000 respectively). She is also the author of a short story collection called Weeds. Her earlier work on Indian philosophy, Stories of Sages, was brought out by Writers Workshop in 2007. She has been working as Assistant Editor with Dainik Saamnaa since 1989.

After the publication of Stories of Sages, Mrs. Sawkar received several requests from readers to write a book about the Vedas and other sacred Indian texts in language that would be easily understood by present-day Indians who were not very familiar with ancient Indian philosophical ideas. This book is a result of those requests. In her introduction to the book, Mrs. Sawkar writes:
“Evolution of religious thought in India is a highly interesting topic. We all should be familiar with it. An undercurrent of spirituality could be succinctly discerned in that era; it strikes us as an inborn characteristic that had possessed all minds; was a strong constituent of the fabric of society and was as powerful a trigger to changes of life style and creation of literary formats as scientific inventions and discovery of new land rampant in those days. Even though archaeological evidence in this misty era is disappointingly sparse, prevalent literature furbishes us with a clear cut and enlightening foray into this topic.”
