Uprooted: Part Two

Every day, every night,
young Thangjam Shimrey
dreams of the gurgling forest brook
back home.

He wears the memory of it
around his neck
like his own hyphenated
Naga-Meitei self.
Then he strums his guitar
in the dingy hostel-hole
of a sunburnt city,
and tries hard
not to remember
the groping games boys play,
the grenades whizzing past his ear,
and the cold, sharp slap of water
when he lost his innocence
in Ukhrul’s icy churn.
